I work for the government and in customer service. For some, these words do not seem to go together, but having first hand knowledge, I know that getting good customer service is possible. And with some foresight from the customer, it can happen more times then not.
If you have had problems getting good customer service I have some tips that will hopefully help you in the future.
Like a Boy Scout, be prepared. Before calling any business that you have gotten a card from (credit card, library card, etc...), make sure to have that card in front of you. Chances are high that they will ask for your account number.
If you are calling in regards to a problem, keep written documentation of the date/time you called, and to whom you talked. Have all of your records in front of you with the problem in question highlighted, so you can easily find the information to give to the person you called.
Incorrect information does get onto accounts, but being hostile to the person you called only gets their hackles up, and makes it less likely that they will want to help. I'm not saying be a pushover, but remember you do get more bears with honey then vinegar.
Just remember, sometimes when there is a problem it is your fault. (Not something you want to read, but it does happen.) Take a breath, and go through all the information again before calling or stopping at the business. If possible run it by someone else, trying not to sway them to your side, and see what they make of the situation.
You may need to be persistent. If you are not getting anywhere with the person you're talking to, ask to talk with a manager. Or call back later after regrouping, and talk with someone else.
These simple tips should help you get better service, and give you more time to sign-up for some freebies.
